Wind Vanes are important tools for measuring weather and are some of the earliest invented meteorological tools used to show the direction of the wind. The arrow will point in the direction the wind is coming from. They help scientists predict the weather because wind brings us other weather such as snow.

How to make a wind vane for kids

large clear plastic cup (pint size)

scissors
tape
pencil with an eraser at the end
glue
bobby pin
straw (not the bendy kind)
compass

Ingredients

135g Unsalted butter, softened
160g Caster sugar
55g Cocca powder
50g Self-rasing flour, sifted
2 medium free range eggs, lightly beaten
20g chocolate chips
10g marshmallows
Toppings (optional - e.g pretels, sprinkles, chocolate beans).

Spatula
Mixing bowl
Sieve
Baking tray (170x139x25mm)
Baking parchment
Wire rack

STEP BY STEP GUIDE

STEP 1

Turn your plastic cup upside down and punch a hole through the centre. Ask an adult to help you.

STEP 2

Printable weather template

Cut out your template, roll it and secure the edges together with some tape. Place it inside the plastic cup. You may like to add a little tape at the bottom also.

Sharpened pencil with a rubber on the end

STEP BY STEP GUIDE

STEP 1

Turn your plastic cup upside down and punch a hole through the centre. Ask an adult to help you.

STEP 2

Cut out your template, roll it and secure the edges together with some tape. Place it inside the plastic cup. You may like to add a little tape at the bottom also.

Stick the pencil through the hole in the cup so that the eraser is sticking out of the top.

STEP 4

Cut out the two triangles and squares on the template. Sandwich one end of the straw between the two triangles and the other end between the two squares. Use a bit of glue to stick them together.

STEP 5

Push the pin through the centre of the straw and attach it to the top of the pencil rubber, by pushing the pin into the rubber. Check your arrow can move freely by blowing against it.

STEP 6

Put your wind vane outside and watch the arrow move in the wind! You can use a compass to find out where the arrow is pointing and see whether the wind is blowing north, east, south, west, how fun! If you'd like to try more fun weather related experiments, why not make our Weather Station.
