Award-winning baker, author and entrepreneur Adelle Smith is mum to Cai and two stepchildren, Elsie and Stanley. She is the founder of BKD, a design-led bakery with a focus on children’s baking events and kits. She is also the author of Baked, a creative baking book for children and their parents.
Adelle’s background is in design and market research, but when making her son his first birthday cake reignited her lifelong love of baking, she decided to turn her passion into a business. She launched her anti-kitsch children’s baking classes from her home in Shoreditch, east London, and quickly started working with brands such as Nintendo, Toca Boca, Universal Studios and Fortnum & Mason, hosting private birthday parties and making bespoke biscuits. Within a year, Adelle had moved BKD out of her home and set up a bakery. She then created a distinctive range of artisan, creative children’s baking kits, stocked by John Lewis, Harvey Nichols, Harrods, Fenwick and other major retailers.
Adelle’s baking events and kits have appeared in a number of publications, including The Times, the Guardian and Prima magazine. She has presented at shows such as the BBC Good Food Show, Foodies Festivals, Bakewell Festival and her video tutorials with Cai have been used by several brands, including Kenwood. Only three months after launching BKD, Adelle found herself at the finals of the Virgin Foodpreneur competition meeting Richard Branson, and many accolades followed. In 2015, Adelle and BKD were awarded a Junior Design Award for Best Children’s Food Brand, and a Loved by Parents Award for Best Activity Toy 6+. This was followed by two Smallish Design Awards 2016, for Best Family Cookbook and Best Children’s Food and Drink Brand and a Gold Junior Design Award 2016 for Best Family Cookbook.
BAKED is Adelle’s first book and was released on the 28th July. Set apart from other children’s cookbooks by stunning photography and lifestyle ideas, this stylish and accessible book gives the reader ideas for creating and styling children’s parties, as well as over 20 projects and recipes, and easy-to-follow cake and biscuit decorating projects: from simple Oreo Chick Pops and Minibeast Sugar Cookies, to more challenging Rainbow Unicorn Cupcakes and Gingerbread Houses.

Lisa grew up in Cape Town, South Africa. She would love to tell you that she had a pet elephant but unfortunately this was not the case. She did, however, share her house with dogs, cats, guinea pigs, birds, rats, fish and rabbits. She studied Graphic Design and loves designing products and visuals aimed towards kids. After moving to England she dedicated her time to studying child development and obtained her Montessori Diploma for children aged 0-6 years. Lisa is a qualified Montessori Teacher and has been doing so in and around London since 2012. She enjoys planning and organising fun activities for kids and being able to deliver new ways of thinking through creative learning. On her days off she can be found wondering around North London, sweating it out at Bikram Yoga and eating way too many scrummy vegetarian treats.

Becky inherited her love of baking from her mum who is a dab hand in the kitchen having made her the same castle birthday cake for over 20 years. Whilst at university in Falmouth, Becky used her 6 housemates as guinea pigs for all her culinary experiments, and continued to obsess over all things food. She then moved back to London and has since been working as a graphic designer on a variety of projects from book illustration to exhibition design. In 2016 she decided she wanted to make baking a part of her career and now splits her working week, one half immersed in biscuits and cake at BKD, and the other designing all things graphical. She is now sharing her baking knowledge with her niece and nephew who frequently help her out in the kitchen, with varying levels of success. It was seeing the imaginative creations they came up with that inspired Becky to make the leap and start working with BKD and all their lovely mini bakers.
